WhatsApp Launches ‘Safety Overview’ Tool to Shield Users from Scam Groups

WhatsApp has rolled out a new security feature called ‘Safety Overview’ to protect users from being unknowingly added to suspicious group chats by unknown contacts. This follows rising concerns about scams proliferating via group chats on the platform.

How the ‘Safety Overview’ Works

When a user is added to a WhatsApp group by someone not in their contacts, the app now displays a full-screen alert giving key details about the group— including the group’s creator, creation date, and number of members. This overview also offers tips to stay safe from scams and frauds. Users can exit the group immediately without opening the chat, or choose to stay if they recognize the group. Notifications from these groups remain muted until the user opts to stay.

Tackling Sophisticated Scam Operations

The introduction of this feature comes amid WhatsApp and Meta’s intensified crackdown on scams. In the first half of 2025, WhatsApp banned over 6.8 million accounts linked to organized scam centers, particularly those based in Southeast Asia. These scam networks engage in deceptive schemes such as fake social media payments, pyramid rentals, and cryptocurrency fraud.

In one notable case, WhatsApp, Meta, and OpenAI collaborated to disrupt a criminal scam ring in Cambodia. The scammers used AI tools like ChatGPT to create convincing initial messages to lure victims into fraudulent group chats, later moving them to Telegram and soliciting cryptocurrency deposits as part of elaborate pyramid schemes.

Additional Safety Measures and User Guidance

Besides the ‘Safety Overview’, WhatsApp is testing alerts for individual chats initiated by unknown numbers, providing context about the contact to help users make informed decisions before replying. WhatsApp also advises users to enable two-step verification, block and report suspicious accounts, silence unknown callers, and use the official app to stay safe from scams.

A Stronger Commitment to User Security

These new tools underscore WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing user safety amid escalating scam attempts. With over two billion users globally, providing transparency and control over group invitations and interactions aims to reduce fraud exposure significantly.
